How to Install MPV Player (MPV Media Player) In Ubuntu

In this article we are going to learn How to install mpv player in Ubuntu. mpv media player is a open source media player application used to play video and audio files. this application is based on a popular media player application called mplayer. mpv player application is developed by mplayer developers using C programming language on year 2013 and released under GNU GPLv3 license.

Follow the below steps to install mpv player (mpv media player) in Ubuntu:

Before start the installation of mpv player we have to install the official PPA repository for that as it’s not a part of default repository of Ubuntu. So to install the PPA repository use the below command.

itsmarttricks@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/mpv-tests   # Install PPA Repository
[sudo] password for itsmarttricks: 
 *Note: any issues regarding ytdl:
Update to the latest upstream version before filing issue with me or at mpv github
The latest min. version required for 16.04 is 2017.08.09

*Note -  mpv.conf is the new default for a config file
Best, new default  location is ~/.config/mpv/ using mpv.conf

After installing the PPA repository for mpv media player now let’s update the packages and repository of Ubuntu using below command to take effect.

Now we are ready to install the mpv player package after completed the all above steps. So let’s go ahead and install the same using below command.

itsmarttricks@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install mpv   # Install mpv Package

As you can see above we have successfully installed the mpv media player package. To confirm the same refer the below command.

You can also open the mpv application graphically using Search your computer box.

How To Uninstall MPV Player (MPV Media Player) in Ubuntu?

For any reasons, if you don’t like MPV Player (MPV Media Player) Application and want to uninstall the application from your system using the following command.

itsmarttricks@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg -r mpv   # Uninstall the mpv Package
